Section geometry

Rectangular section, singly reinforced, tension steel at the bottom face. Positive (sagging) moment only.

Web width. Range 6 to 48 in.

Overall depth, top of beam to bottom. Range 8 to 60 in.

Concrete surface to outside of stirrup, not to the bar centroid. Effective depth d is computed from this. Range 1 to 3 in.

Reinforcement

Tension bars only. Clear spacing between bars must be at least max(bar diameter, 1 in) (ACI 318-19 §25.2.1).

Longitudinal tension bar, #4 through #11.

Total across all layers (2 to 12). Must divide evenly by the number of layers.

Bars are split equally between layers; the layer spacing is the larger of one bar diameter and 1 in.

Materials

Specified concrete strength. Range 3,000 to 10,000 psi.

Longitudinal bars. Stirrup yield strength is capped at 60 ksi for shear design. Range 40 to 100 ksi.

1.0 for normal weight concrete; 0.75 to 0.85 for lightweight (ACI 318-19 Table 19.2.4.2). Range 0.75 to 1.0.

Loading

Enter factored loads from your ACI 318-19 load combinations, not service loads. Self-weight is not added automatically.

Maximum factored positive moment. Enter as a magnitude (0 or greater).

Factored shear at the critical section, a distance d from the support face where applicable (§9.4.3.2).

Shear reinforcement

Uncheck to check the beam without stirrups. Then concrete alone resists shear and the size-effect factor applies (§22.5.5.1.3).

#3, #4 or #5. Also sets the offset from cover to the first bar when computing d.

Vertical legs crossing a shear plane. A standard closed stirrup has 2. Range 2 to 6.

Center-to-center along the beam. Required when stirrups are present. Range 2 to 24 in; the maximum spacing limit (§9.7.6.2.2) is checked by the engine.
